subduction zone

subduction zone
ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY GLOSSARY
The zone of convergence of two tectonic plates, one of which usually overrides the other.

GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMS
A sloping region at collisional plate boundaries where one tectonic plate overrides another tectonic plate. In most regions, continental crust overrides oceanic crust which is then consumed in the subduction zone (continental – oceanic plate boundary), but in many areas, oceanic crust may be overridden by another plate of oceanic crust (oceanic – oceanic plate boundaries). Deep oceanic trenches commonly occur as the surface landform associated with subduction zones. Melting of the subducting slab commonly produces magma which rises to the earth's surface to produce volcanic arcs.
